How I Met Your Mother ep 1
1. Barney: (on the phone) hey, so you know how I’ve always had a thing for half-Asian girls? Well, now I’ve got a new favorite: Lebanesegirls! Lebanese girls are the new half-Asians.
=> have a thing for sb. or sth. means I have a craze for ..../I have a special interest in
也有用have a thing about~
2. Lily: Urgh. I’m exhausted. It was finger painting day at school, and a five year old boy (takes coat off revealing a purple hand print on her
right breast) got to second base with me.
=> get to second base.
First base is commonly understood to be kiss, no matter French or mouth-to mouth kissing. Second base usually refers to groping, especially breasts or somthing. Third base means oral sex or handjob. Home Run is sexual intercourse.
3. Narrator: Marshall was in his second year of law school, so he was pretty good at thinking on his feet.
4. Ted: Sup, Carl?
=> 美國很口語非正式的用法,等於what’s up?或是how are you?之類的打招呼問侯語。
5. Barney: (ignoring) how does Carl land a Lebanese girl?
例如:land a good job 撈到一個好差事
6. Ted: Uh, I know this is a long shot, but how about tomorrow night?
7. Lily: Let’s go (pulls Marshall up)
Marshall: Word up!
=> word up = yes = you’re so right. I agree. 口語用法,認同對方的話,類似yes,我同意你的含義。
8. Ted: (Exhales) Okay. Moment of truth. Wish me luck. (Exhales)
